A brand new feature in NBA 2K23 allows you to customize how the shot meter appears when it is enabled. There is a profile that places a higher weight on openness than the default setting. This is the right choice, though you are free to tinker further to discover what is best for you. Make sure you lead your teammates to open space by holding the circle or pressing the button.
