Blizzard confirms that Diablo 4 is still getting Set Items, though you'll likely wait until after launch for the ability to use them within the game.
Game designer Joe Shely explains during a recent roundtable that reimagining sets in a way that works with Diablo 4 properly wouldn't be feasible for the launch of Diablo 4 in the first quarter of next year, even though the team is considering the possibility of incorporating them into their live streaming service.
"As we've been working on the game, we realized that we could create sets in a different approach to the ones we've observed in Diablo 3. We just needed additional time to incorporate them in a way that will fit in with the rest of Diablo 4, so you will not see any sets when you first start on the map," Shely explains. "We consider sets to be cool, and we want to be sure that they're done right - which is why we're taking a look into for the live services we're planning to offer."
"There's a staff legendary within the demo that changes the spell's fireball to three fireballs," former director of games Luis Barriga told Polygon(opens in new tab) back in 2019. "The thing that's different is that the spell that's activated spell in the current version of Diablo 3 gives you bonuses that are a lot more than the thousands. We're thinking of designing the game to be a little less constrained so that we don't get us into that super escalating power-curve cheap Diablo 4 Boosting."
