Replica Zenith watches Defy Extreme Double Tourbillon
High-speed tourbillons for timekeeping and higher-speed tourbillons for chronographs.
Zenith is a legend in the field of precision timing and high-speed movements. For the past five years, it has consistently delivered great watches with great value and incredible technical specifications. Three years ago, it launched a limited edition double tourbillon, one driving a 1/100-second chronograph and the other driving a 5Hz tourbillon chronograph. The Defy El Primero Double Tourbillon watch is made of 50 pieces in carbon fiber and 10 pieces in platinum, with the bridges, tourbillon cage and base plate all blued.
The watchmaker is now mass-producing the watch in two models, called the Defy Extreme Double Tourbillon. Both versions come in a 45mm case in titanium with a titanium bracelet, or in carbon fiber with a matte rose gold 12-sided bezel and rubber strap.
The history of high-speed chronographs
High-speed chronograph luxury replica watches are not new to this industry. In fact, one of the watchmakers actively pursuing this complication is TAG Heuer, the sister brand to LVMH Group-owned Zenith. Back in 2011, it released the Carrera Mikrograph with a 1/100-second chronograph display. Following closely behind was the Carrera Mikrotimer Flying 1000, which improved chronograph performance tenfold.
The following year, TAG Heuer released the Carrera Mikrotourbillon S, equipped with dual tourbillons and dual barrels that independently drive the time and chronograph gear trains. While TAG Heuer did not continue to pursue this goal, Zenith took over the technology and used it in its Caliber 9020 movement to power the new Defy Extreme Double Tourbillon watch.
The challenge of high-speed chronographs
There are two main difficulties in operating a high-speed chronograph. The first is electricity, as running a regulator at 360,000vph requires a lot of energy. That’s why the Defy Extreme Double Tourbillon Chronograph’s power reserve only runs for 50 minutes at a time. This also means that the movement has less space for the chronograph mainspring. The second is wear and tear on the fast-moving parts of the timing regulator. The Zenith team has been testing the performance of the 9020 movement for the past three years, and so far we have not heard of any issues with the chronograph regulator.
New Defy Extreme Double Tourbillon
The new model is very similar to the original Defy El Primero Double Tourbillon watch. An open dial with applied hour markers and counters with colored transparent sapphire elements reveal various parts of the movement. The chronograph seconds track (reading 1/100th of a second) is located on the inner bezel, and a second inner minute track runs partially around the dial and is interrupted by two tourbillon bridges.
Instead of being blued, the bridges of the Defy Extreme Double Tourbillon have a black PVD coating on a brushed surface, with gold accents around the edges to emphasize its angular shape. Gold accents can also be seen in colored sapphires and around the counter. The accents are reminiscent of one of the 2020 Lamborghini Huracáns.
The oscillating weight on the back of the movement is also hollowed out and treated with black PVD, and its design also features the Zenith star emblem. Its bridges have the same golden decoration as the tourbillon bridge. The watch’s TimeLab certification is marked on the oscillating weight. The motherboard has a light gray sandblasted coating that contrasts nicely with the black PVD parts.
