Cedar Pencil Slats

Pencil slats are thin wooden boards used to manufacture standard wooden pencils. These pencil slats are typically made from incense cedar or basswood. A pair of pencil slats is grooved to hold a graphite core securely.

The grooves in pencil slats are milled precisely to match the core diameter. Pencil slats with a thickness of 0.2 inches are ideal for standard No. 2 pencils. The surface of pencil slats is sanded smooth for even glue application.

Pencil slats are stacked in layers with glue between them. A press compresses the pencil slats to form a solid block. The block of pencil slats is then cut into individual pencil shapes.

Pencil slats with a straight grain are preferred to prevent warping. The moisture content of pencil slats is kept below 8% for stability. Pencil slats are stored in climate‑controlled warehouses to maintain quality.

High‑quality pencil slats have no knots or resin pockets. The color of pencil slats can be natural or stained for decorative pencils. Pencil slats are also used for making carpenter pencils. A reliable source of pencil slats ensures consistent production of writing instruments.
